February 26, 2012 (First Sunday in Lent) Genesis 9:8-17 Psalm 25:1-9 1 Peter 3:18-22 Mark 1:9-15 (From The Lectionary Page) As a boy I was fascinated by a carving that belonged to a neighbor down the road. Carved into a whole nutshell about the size of a medium-sized pecan was a Noah’s Ark brim-full with pairs of animals. The carving was among treasures this woman had brought back home after spending time with her physician husband and family as Presbyterian medical missionaries in Nanjing, China. I believe a patient had carved the familiar Bible story as a token of gratitude....

OUR DIOCESAN PRIORITIES Since mid-2011, the people of the congregations of the Diocese of West Missouri have been engaged in a sweeping and long-range, futuring process which included several forums across the diocese entitled “Shaping Our Future”. The raw results of the forums was a pile of thousands of individual pieces of input about would-be priorities for our diocesan life. Our Futuring Task Group took your significant and varied input and extrapolated it all down to five, overarching priorities, all dealing with growth. The members of the Futuring Task Group and I agree these priorities should be both the core...

February 19, 2012 (Last Sunday after the Epiphany) 2 Kings 2:1-12 Psalm 50:1-6 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 Mark 9:2-9 (From The Lectionary Page) This just in: We humans are creatures of habit and routine. Like other species, we tend to be neophobic — suspicious of change – even though (or maybe precisely because) change is the one constant of life on our planet. And change is a primary feature of today’s gospel passage. We hear an account of the Transfiguration of Jesus each year on the last Sunday of Epiphany. We heard Mark’s version a moment ago, but to get the...

February 12, 2012 (Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany) 2 Kings 5:1-14 Psalm 30 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Mark 1:40-45 (From The Lectionary Page) For years a two-frame cartoon was displayed on the door of our refrigerator. The first frame had a line drawing of a dorky middle-age man with a caption underneath that read, “Parent of eighth grader.” The second frame had a drawing of a dopey, smiling clown. It bore the caption, “Parent as seen by eighth-grader.” We took that cartoon along with us when we moved from Kansas City to Seattle with a thirteen year old eighth grader in...

Health information privacy laws prohibit hospitals — even Episcopal hospitals — from routinely calling clergy when parishioners are admitted. Go to www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy for more information. If you are hospitalized, please contact the Cathedral 816-474-8260 [for Deacon Jerry Grabher, ext. 111; for Canon Sue Sommer, ext. 107; for Dean Peter DeVeau, ext. 151]. If you cannot place the call yourself, ask a family member, friend, or hospital chaplain to place the call. If you do not receive a visit, most likely your clergy do not know you are hospitalized. Cathedral clergy want to provide pastoral care to hospitalized parishioners; they count...

February 5, 2012 (Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany) Isaiah 40:21-31 Psalm 147:1-12, 21c 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 Mark 1:29-39 (From The Lectionary Page) A friend of mine texted me late last week with the news that they finally have an offer on their house. He asked for my prayers. I assured him that I would not only pray but light a candle before a shrine of Blessed St. Joseph – patron saint of home sales – if he thought it would help. He texted back, “Yes please, and throw in a couple of Tebows while you’re at it.” Now it’s a...
