Summer brings additions to the Cathedral

This is a summer of transition at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, and we are delighted to share with you news of three additions to our Cathedral family.

The Reverend Susan L. Sommer has accepted the call to join the staff as an assistant priest and will hold the title of Canon Pastor and Subdean. Among her duties will be sharing in celebrating the Sacraments, preaching, teaching and pastoral responsibilities, and assisting the Dean in certain administrative matters.

A priest with over ten years of experience, Sue is currently Vicar of Grace Church, New Lenox, Illinois, and Dean of the Joliet Deanery in the Diocese of Chicago. She has served as Assistant Rector of both the Church of the Annunciation, Gurnee, and Emmanuel Church, LaGrange, Illinois, and as Director of Student Services at Seabury-Western Seminary in Evanston. Her diocesan work includes the spiritual formation of people studying for Holy Orders, dedicated service on the Commission on Ordained Ministry, and training parish leaders to prevent sexual harassment and ensuring that children are safe.

A Michigan native, Sue is married to Rick, and their daughter Cady will be entering first grade. Sue ends her tenure at Grace Church on July 31, and after some vacation time and following the family’s move, she will begin her work with us on or about September 1.

The Reverend Carol Sanford has accepted the call to serve halftime as Curate at the Cathedral and half-time on the Bishop’s staff as the new Coordinator of Campus Ministry for our diocese. Carol graduated in May with a M.Div. degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, Calif. She also holds a degree in history with an emphasis in East Asia from Emory University in Atlanta.

Carol was ordained into the transitional diaconate in June here at the Cathedral. Carol and her husband Grady come to us from Christ Church, Springfield, Mo. Carol will begin her work at the Cathedral August 15.

Watch the weekly bulletin for announcements about how we will be welcoming both the Sanford and Sommer families to the Kansas City area and to the Cathedral.

DeAnn Pasley McTavish has accepted the call to serve as Director of Children’s Formation at the Cathedral. DeAnn and her son Graham are active members of the Cathedral; she has taught children’s formation classes for many years, working closely over the last year with acting director Jackye Finnie.

DeAnn is also directing our Vacation Bible School this summer, has begun planning for the fall program and is working with Alexandra Connors to establish a Youth Group steering committee to plan and coordinate senior and junior youth groups.

Building a strong education and formation program was identified during the search process as our parish’s number one priority for the new dean.

Please join us in welcoming DeAnn to the Cathedral staff and share with her what you are willing to do to support and grow our programs.

Summer music tradition continues

A long-running Cathedral tradition continues this month with the annual Music at the Cathedrals series of Sunday recitals. Two of the four concerts will take place here at GHTC, with the other two held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

The series begins on August 7 with Canon Musician John Schaefer performing organ works by J.S. Bach, Percy Whitlock and Julius Reubke. Oboist Meribeth Risebig and trumpeter Keith Benjamin will join John for two other works.

Choral music is the focus on August 14 with a concert by the 100-plus Kansas City Summer Singers. The group is led by William Baker, whose Festival Singers are favorites of Cathedral music-goers. Johannes Brahms’ “A German Requiem” is the featured work in two performances, the regular Sunday program and again the following evening, August 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Kevin Kissinger, one-time organist at St. George’s Episcopal Church, brings his talents on August 21, with violinist Gregory Sandomirsky and prize-winning pianist Nathan Brandwein rounding out the series on August 28.

The August 7 and 14 performances will be here at GHTC; the August 21 and 28 recitals will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 11th and Broadway. All programs begin at 3:00 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door. Some of the proceeds will go to the Trinity Choir Tour Fund.

Choir fund-raiser

The Trinity Mixed Choir will be having a bulb fund-raiser. This fund-raiser is in anticipation of their 2006 summer choir tour to England. Orders will be taken in August with delivery in the fall in time for planting.

The bulbs will be ordered from Van Engelen Inc., a flower bulb specialist in Connecticut. The owner is a fourth generation Dutch flower bulb specialist and this company has the “Harold Phillips” seal of approval. Bishop Spencer Place has sold flower bulbs for many years but has discontinued the sale beginning this year. Trinity Choir would like to continue this BEAUTIFUL fund-raiser!

Please buy your fall bulbs from Trinity Choir! Questions call Lenette Johnson (816-455-0148) or lenette-johnson@kc.rr.com.

Let’s Play Ball!

Or, better yet, let’s go to the ball game! We are planning an outing for anyone and everyone at the Royals game on Friday, August 5, at 7:10 p.m. Let’s watch the Royals defeat the Oakland A’s. Plus, it’s buck night, which means that hot dogs, peanuts, and small drinks are merely a dollar each. Call the office or sign up at coffee hour to reserve your spot. Tickets are $12 per person.

And then, let’s go to a T-Bones game. We are planning group seating for the T-Bones on Friday, August 19, at 7:05. Call the office or sign up at coffee hour to reserve a ticket for this special night when the T-Bones will take on the Gary-Southshore RailCats. Tickets are $9 per person.

For more information, call the office (816-474-8260). Come and bring along family and friends.

The Cathedral’s Financial Status

June saw the total received from pledge and plate exceed budget by $1300. Thank you. Actual expenses exceeded budgeted expenses by $8200. A planned distribution from our annual William T. Kemper bequest allowed us to pay our bills.

A new priest and a new deacon will increase our expenses but also will open up new opportunities in our ministry. Please support this step of faith by Dean White and the Vestry.

Sunday Scripture Study • Youth Room
Every Sunday

A Bible study centering on the scripture readings of the day will be held in Haden Hall’s Youth Room. Everyone is welcome to come and explore the Bible in a deeper way.

Living Faithfully as a Prayer Book People • Common Room
July 31, August 7 & 14

Join The Rev. Linda Yeager as we walk through the Book of Common Prayer with John Westerhoff, author and Episcopal priest, discussing the ways that the contents of the Prayer Book can shape our lives. Westerhoff gives a brief history of the Prayer Book and talks about how Episcopalians live into their baptism, how they live a Eucharistic and reconciling life, and how that life exhibits wholeness and health. This very readable book is divided into chapters, including “Living a Prayer Book Life,” “Living as a Prayerful People,” and “Living a Holy Life and Death.” The book is available in the Cathedral Bookstore. If you choose not to buy the book, come to the discussion anyway; you will find it rewarding and enlightening.

Meet the staff from Maison de Naissance!

Well, not the WHOLE staff, but some of the most generous, caring individuals from Kansas City who have ministered to those in Haiti. Dr. Stan Shaffer, along with others, will visit with us on Sunday, August 21 at 9:15 a.m. in the Common Room. Last month’s The Angelus carried a story about this ministry devoted to new life, and we are pleased to continue the ‘line’ as interest has really grown and questions have surfaced. Opportunities to be a part of the Haitian Episcopal Learning Partnerships (HELP) and the Maison de Naissance Advisory Board have been offered to GHTC and many of our members have responded to the call already. Thank you. There are several ways we can be supportive of this outreach mission. On the following Sunday, August 28, we will convene for a group discussion about how GHTC may work and pray together for a community in need.

A note to ministry leaders and small group facilitators

Relax, sit back. There is no need to think about ‘creative ways to display your group’s ministry’ … yet! Yes, the ministry fair at GHTC has seen September days but not this year. Stay tuned for further developments on how we plan to celebrate the people and ministries at GHTC!

The Leaders in Children’s Formation

Part five in an ongoing series which introduces persons who work with the Cathedral’s Children’s Formation ministry.

Dolly McCarson

Dolly McCarson is a very humble and helpful person in Haden Hall on Sunday mornings. Always smiling and cheerful, she is a Chapel Leader in the Children’s Chapel for 5-8 year olds. She directs the Liturgy in the chapel on a rotation schedule.

Dolly said, “My part in the Children’s Ministry is very small. The ministry is successful due to many individuals who give so much of themselves to make it happen. The Cathedral is blessed to have these people who care so much for the little ones in our midst.”

As a Chapel Leader and Guild of the Christ Child member, Dolly McCarson is one of the blessings and a blessing is no small thing!

Dolly has been a Chapel Leader since the inception of Children’s Chapel in November 2004. She became a part of the Children’s Ministry through our beloved Jackye Finnie. “Getting to know the children and families of the Cathedral” is a great benefit Dolly receives from her ministry.

She marvels at the children “experiencing the fellowship of worshipping with their peers. Having a ‘church’ of their own” is so important to them. Dolly believes the structure of the Chapel assists children in their formation. Yet the structure does not inhibit them.

“The children, in Chapel, love to get up and dance when we play our songs on the CD player. It is quite humorous to see them boogying to the hymns.” If you are considering joining the Children’s Ministry Dolly assures that “It is a wonderful opportunity to know and lead the children in our church.”

Dolly started attending Grace and Holy Trinity, with her husband Ken, about ten years ago. They came to the Cathedral when they moved here from St. Louis. They visited many churches and felt most comfortable at the Cathedral. Dolly is the proud mother of Connor, 7, and James, 2. In her spare time Dolly works and “chases my active boys.”

“I have very little spare time. I do manage to find time to read. I am an avid reader and a member of a book club in my neighborhood. I am trying to learn to knit, but can’t find enough time to finish any projects I start. I enjoy long walks when I can squeeze them in.” If she did have more time she would read, walk, garden and “work on projects in our old Brookside home.”

Jackye Finnie

Jackye Finnie is a tremendous blessing to Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral. Words cannot express what she has done for, and means to, Children’s Formation here.

In less than two years Jackye transformed Haden Hall Sunday mornings into a more, focused spiritual experience for our children and a better organized volunteer experience for teachers. Jackye, with her Super Woman managerial skills, anticipated and addressed every detail of Children’s Formation, while recruiting a diverse group of Cathedral members to assist than ever before.

As Acting Director of Children’s Education, Jackye researched and instituted two new curriculumsduring the 2004-2005 Church School year. Godly Play, a multi-sensory, Montessori based approach to spiritual formation, is used in the Preschool and Grades K-2 faith exploration rooms. All Things New, a series of thematic Biblical stories coupled with Episcopalian tradition, nurtures emergent critical thinking skills in children grades 3-5.

Jackye established two new Children’s Chapels in which the younger members of our congregation (age 3-8) celebrate a pint-sized order of service while we bigger kids (age 9-109) attend our 10:15 service.

The chapels provide an introduction to the organization of worship activities, with an emphasis on age appropriate homilies, and engage the children as participants. The chapels prepare them to enter the nave with knowledge and respect.

“The curriculums used by the children’s ministries are the best! I just love them!” Jackye said. “They help to build a classroom differently than the typical teacher-student classroom. They are much like a science lab where experiments are undertaken and discoveries are made. In the Godly Play and All Things New rooms the children discover God. They share their relationship with God in their own way, and in their own time, through stories, art, music and prayer. We are so blessed. We are grateful to our strong clergy and leadership for the tools to support our programs. Special thanks to Fr. White for his confidence in the program. Many of our members have been a godsend to us bearing gifts of CD players, altar tables, altar covers, banners, lecterns, books and so much more!”

After cataloging over one hundred stored books, that had previously been inaccessible to parishioners, Jackye arranged for and dedicated the Louise Barton Children’s Memorial Library in November 2004. Thanks to Jackye’s hard work and the donations of Cathedral members we now have over 150 titles in the library!

“Formation is such an exciting experience for the children and their leaders,” Jackye said. “It gives both the opportunities to experience God and to discover Christianity. One needs only to visit the classrooms or chapels to see God at work with the children. I get so much joy from hearing them sing, blurt out a prayer with the chapel leader or raise their hands to help with chapel duties. There is no doubt that our children are building relationships with God.”

And what would Jackye say to anyone interested in Children’s Ministry? “Join us! All you need is a love of Jesus and a love of children.”

The Lord sent Jackye our way when her husband Joe was confirmed at the Cathedral. Joe fulfilled Jackye’s childhood dream of having an Episcopal nuptial wedding. The loving couple was married in Key West, Florida but moved to Kansas City soon after.

The Cathedral has been their church home since 1968. Their daughters, Julie and Jodi were baptized and confirmed here. Julie, and her husband Daniel Harris, were married at the Cathedral in 1994.

Julie, Daniel and their two daughters, now live in St. Louis but attend worship at the Cathedral when they are in Kansas City. Grandson, Deante, is a member of Choraliers and worships here. “Our family is rooted in the Cathedral” said Jackye.

In Jackye’s spare time she loves to read, work crossword puzzles and play hand held Yahtzee. Rumor has it she carries it in her purse! “I love the game and I play it every day,” she laughs.

In addition to children’s ministry activities (she taught kindergarten formation classes for two years, assists in Vacation Bible School and chapel), Jackye has served in many groups including the Altar Guild, St. Francis Guild and the Dean’s Selection Committee.

“The wonderful experience of the groups was only shadowed by the joy of getting to know so many wonderful members of the church. But I especially enjoy children’s ministries.” If Jackye had more time she would study more Spanish and learn to play piano. We are so thankful, to  God, that Jackye gives so much of her time to our children.

Musicians needed to share in leadership of music for worship

The Choirs are looking forward to resuming activities for the autumn months. Each choir has openings for musicians who would like to give time and energy to sharing in the leadership of music for worship. Please take note of the following:

The Trinity Choir is seeking some tenors. Those who are interested should have a degree of sight-singing ability and must have accurate tuning. The Choir rehearses on Thursday evening and sings Sunday morning, Evensong once a month on the third Sunday, and occasional additional services. Current members can tell you how much fun we have.

The Tallis Singers will welcome the “graduates” of last season’s Grace Choraliers. The Singers would like to add two or three young gentlemen with changed voices; we would also be glad to include interested and talented females. The Singers will rehearse on Wednesdays in the late afternoon/early evening and will sing every other Sunday during the year and for certain feast days.

Malinda McCasland, director of the Grace Choraliers, will be seeking new singers amongst the Church School children. The rehearsals are held on Wednesdays, beginning at 6 p.m. The Choraliers sing in worship about every six weeks.

The human voice is the one instrument that God gives to all at birth. Using that voice to sing God’s glory is a wonderful way to minister to God’s people. We urge you to avail yourself of the opportunity to learn how to use your vocal and musical gifts along with others who are our music ministers.

Another form of ministry is the ringing of hand bells. The Cathedral Bell Ringers also rehearse on Thursdays, beginning in the late afternoon for about an hour. There are several openings. A person need not be a skilled musician to ring hand bells. The ensemble plays for the 10:15 service when ready.

To learn more about the Trinity Choir, the Tallis Singers, or the Cathedral Bell Ringers, please phone Canon Schaefer at 816-474-8260. Malinda McCasland will be glad to talk with you about the Grace Choraliers; her number is 913-829-7916.

Book discussion group changes format

After some two decades of existence, The Book Discussion Group has revised its format.

During the first part of the meetings (which are held on the third Tuesday of each month), the group discusses a book selected at the previous month’s gathering.

That discussion is followed by a period of sharing what other reading members have done since the group last met.

At the conclusion of each meeting, the group selects a book for discussion the following month. This revised format was initiated in April and has proven to be a way for members who have not been able to read the selected book to still participate in the discussion.

All are welcome, so please come join the fellowship!!!

In July, the Cathedral celebrated the ministries of The Rev. Benjamin and Jieun Newland.

Fr. Ben served as Associate Priest for five years and Jieun joined us as the Curdy Organ Scholar for three years.

The couple has now moved to Connecticut, where Jieun will begin studies this fall at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.

We shall miss Jieun and Ben and wish them all the success in the world as they spread the Gospel through Word and Music.
