Cavanaugh Memorial Endowment
FACT Sheet
On August 9, 2007, Kansas City lost a community leader who advocated
tirelessly on behalf of those less fortunate. The Very Reverend James
Earl Cavanaugh, Dean Emeritus of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral and
former Chaplain and resident of Bishop Spencer Place, left a legacy in
the Greater Kansas City area and throughout the Episcopal Church. He
served as the fifth Dean of Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
in Kansas City, MO, from 1976 to 1995. From 1995 to 1998 he was Chaplain
of Bishop Spencer Place. His board tenure at Bishop Spencer Place
extended from 2001 — 2006. Dean Cavanaugh was active in many Kansas City
organizations — too many to list — however, the common thread throughout
his involvement was a special attention to those in need of financial
assistance.
Dean Cavanaugh will live on in our hearts and minds as someone who believed in collaboration for the common good. His philosophy was to foster a sense of inclusiveness. As we remember him, it is fitting that Bishop Spencer Place and Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral representatives join together to honor Dean Cavanaugh's commitment to those in need.
Bishop Spencer Place has created a Cavanaugh Memorial Endowment to benefit benevolent care for residents of its care facility and the Cathedral has created a Cavanaugh Memorial Endowment to continue the fight against hunger, ignorance and poverty in Kansas City. A joint committee comprised of representatives from Bishop Spencer Place and the Cathedral is working together to raise funds for the respective endowments. Donations received will be donor-designated and applied either to the Cavanaugh Memorial Endowment for Bishop Spencer Place or the Cavanaugh Memorial Endowment for Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral or a combination thereof as directed by the donor.
Two separate endowment funds have been established at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. One will benefit Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral and the other will benefit Bishop Spencer Place. Both are in the honor of Dean Cavanaugh.
