Outreach at the Cathedral happens within our walls and outside the campus. A major effort is our provision of housing and volunteer support for the Kansas City Community Kitchen. Since its beginning with the opening of our basement for a daily hot soup lunch for the homeless, this Jubilee ministry has evolved into a program that provides nutritious meals for more than 500 people a day, including the homeless, the working poor, the elderly and families with children.
Cook teams prepare the food; home and community gardeners supply some of the produce; hunters provide game; and members engage in
fund-raising events. Support, both financial and volunteer, also comes from other churches in the community, including other denominations. Expansion of this ministry to provide training in life skills and food service is helping people move into jobs and become self-sufficient.
An emergency assistance program, operated by our Social Outreach Committee, directs the distribution of funds for food, health and shelter. "Warm Hands and Hearts" distributes warm new gloves, socks and hats to the guests of the Kansas City Community Kitchen. Habitat for Humanity is a long-standing interest of our congregation and our members participate in Harmony House, a group of churches which has built 14 Habitat houses in the mid-town area. We are the only Episcopal church in the area that annually fields a team in the AIDS Walk.
Our outreach extends to large civic groups. The Mayor's office has conferences and meetings here, FEMA called on the Cathedral to provide support during the September 11 crisis and shelter during a major ice storm in 2001.
