Small Groups
Small groups provide a vital ministry at the Cathedral. Several groups are well established and have set times and patterns for their meetings, and others are just getting underway.
Many group members are learning that discovering scripture and uncovering common interests with others can bring joy and increased fellowship. God is revealed in new dimensions, which in turn has an increasing impact on their everyday lives.
Listed here are the groups already functioning. If you are interested in joining a group, please call the facilitator or the Cathedral office.
Study and Discussion
Women’s Bible Study meets every Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Common Room. This group engages a particular Biblical book with the help of a leader and occasionally a commentary. Bring your favorite Bible. No question or degree of skepticism is off limits. Contact Canon Sue Sommer for information, ssommer@ghtc-kc.org.
Men’s Bible Study meets every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. in the Common Room of the Cathedral. This group studies books of the Bible and usually follows the meeting with breakfast.
Call the Cathedral office for information, 816.474.8260.
Reel People meets monthly in the evening for dinner and discussion of films, relating the movies spiritually through themes and plots. The group shares a meal and watches the film either during the meeting. Contact Chris and Peggy Morgan, jagcaptsix@hotmail.com.
Social Action
Charitable Needlework Group meets monthly at the Cathedral. Do you want to kick your knitting or crocheting skills up a notch? Try charitable needlework! We work with the Hats 4 Haiti ministry and have started our own project for Maison de Naissance in Haiti. We also encourage prayer shawls, scarves and hats for various venues in the Kansas City area. Bring your yarn, needles or hook and a giving heart. It will be a spiritual experience! Questions? Contact Debbie Marrs, debbie.marrs@att.net.
Friends of MN raises awareness in our local community of the needs of women and children in the Haitian community of Larnage District, Southwestern Haiti. We support the efforts and further the goals of Healthy Mothers–Healthy Babies Foundation, sponsor of Maison de Naissance, to reduce infant and maternal mortality. Group members take turns writing articles for The Angelus and meet throughout the year as needed. Contact Marian Philip, mphilip1933@gmail.com.
Social Action Group concerns itself with issues of outreach and social justice. Members consider ways to reach others through personal ministry and inform the congregation of needs of the community. Contact is Charmaine Fowler, cfowler@kc.rr.com.
Service at GHTC
Acolytes serve at the altar at virtually all Cathedral services. Their ministry adds dignity and order to the liturgy and greatly assists the smooth flow of public worship. This ministry is open both to youth and adults; training is provided. Contact Curtis Hamilton, cdhamilton@gmail.com.
The Altar Guild is a very special ministry and everyone is welcome to participate. In caring for the Altar, linens and vessels we become an active part of the liturgy. We especially need people to work setting up for the 10:15 service (so you’d work from about 8:45-9:10 a.m. one Sunday a month). If you are interested in joining this ministry please contact Janet Sweeting at 816-361-3563. Each month after the Café Grazia dinner we are offering Altar Guild 101. Our topic changes each month and is designed to help anyone know more about what the Altar Guild does.
Garden and Landscaping Guild is a working group devoted to the beautification of our grounds and gardens and has work days throughout the year to plant and care for the gardens. Gardeners — novice or expert — are welcome! Contact Gerry Reynaud, gjreynaud@gmail.com.
Guild of the Christ Child meets monthly at the Cathedral. This group supports and nurtures children’s ministries at the Cathedral, and is an integral part of baptismal celebrations. The members also participate in outreach projects. Childcare is provided for this group. Christine Morrison is the facilitator; call the Cathedral office for more information.
The Handyperson Guild is a group who works around the Cathedral. If you have skills in painting, plumbing, electrical work or other areas & would like to use those talents at GHTC, contact David Barker at dbarker1@kc.rr.com.
The Angelus Small Group participates creatively in the production of the Cathedral’s monthly paper. People whose interests include journalism, creative writing and photography are encouraged to join. Contact Julie Toma, jtoma@ghtc-kc.org.
Ushers greet members and visitors as they arrive for worship services and assist with the smooth flow of “traffic” at Communion. A friendly smile and the capacity for warm hospitality are the two most important criteria. Contact Pat Woolley, patwoolley@sbcglobal.net.
