Coffee Hour graphic

Coffee Hour

We offer MANY thanks to the Holy Hands guild who have faithfully provided tasty Coffee Hour treats throughout the 2009-2010 program year. They are taking a well-deserved summer sabbatical beginning June 13 and will resume their ministry of hospitality in September, following Rally Day.

Coffee Hour will continue through the summer months; any parishioners who wish to bring tasty treats on Sundays are encouraged to do so.

Botswana Palapye Project

On Sunday, June 20, GHTC hosted the launching of the Botswana Palapye Project — a day care center for orphaned and vulnerable children in the Palapye community. The Rev. Canon James Amanze from the Companion Relationship Committee in the Diocese of Botswana was our honored guest for this celebration.

Members of the Diocesan Companion Relationship Committee (of which Dean White is a member) determined that our partnership with Botswana should focus on addressing the needs of orphans and vulnerable children whose only care was being provided by a small Anglican congregation.

To that end, the Diocese will assist in this effort by sponsoring a day care center to address the educational and spiritual needs of these children. This Center is targeted to serve approximately 100 children, with a future goal of developing a full-service community center.

The annual operations of the center are estimated to be $84,500. This would provide daily care for the orphans and vulnerable children, aged 2-6 years. Classroom lessons, meals and snacks and social activities are essential features of the program. In addition, after school care for primary school age children would include tutoring and other educational opportunities.

The Cathedral is one of several diocesan congregations financially supporting this important ministry. Please extend a warm welcome next Sunday to Canon and Mrs. Amanze, as well as to parishioners of other West Missouri congregations.

What can you do to fight hunger in KC?

Hunger is not just a Third World problem. Hunger does not discriminate. Young and elderly, black and white, male and female… the many faces of hunger are different, but the pain and the need are the same. For thousands in our community, hunger is one of life’s daily realities.

Through the Episcopal Hunger Relief Network, a cooperative network of anti-hunger ministries offered by many parishes within the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri and the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, the Episcopal Church will serve nearly 1 million meals to the homeless and working poor in our community. Our programs are thriving with volunteer help and financial support from people like you. For more information on the Episcopal Hunger Relief Network, call 816-561-8920.

The Network includes ministries such as the Kansas City Community Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, Breakfast at St. Paul’s, BackSnacks and the pantries and other feeding programs of the Episcopal Hunger Relief Network.

What can you do to help? Donate money, food or time.

  • Because we can buy food in bulk from Harvesters at a very low price, cash goes a long way. You can write a check to Episcopal Community Services, or directly to one of the pantries or you can donate online (www.episcopalcommunity.org).
  • You can organize a food drive at school, work or in your neighborhood to support the pantries. We can help!
  • If you have time to volunteer, contact us or one of our pantries and we’ll put you to work feeding the hungry.

A Note Concerning Assisting Those in Need

Over the last several months the number of individuals coming to the Cathedral seeking financial assistance has grown substantially, especially on Sunday mornings after the late service. Should anyone ask you for money, the Cathedral clergy strongly encourage you to point them toward a deacon or priest. Please do NOT give cash, even if you hear the response: “I already talked to them and they won’t help me.” Please do not consider it “unchristian” to refuse to give cash to someone who asks you for it. It is our policy never to give cash, but to provide assistance in other forms. Outreach to individuals is made possible by the clergy discretionary fund, and if you wish to assist those in need you may contribute to that fund. Thank you for your generous support of those in need, and if you have any questions please speak with a deacon or priest.

Gifts beyond the present: safe start in Haiti

Healthy Mother–Healthy Babies Foundation, which sponsors Maison de Naissance (MN), is determined to continue and expand programs in the current service zone and beyond, and is counting on us for support. HM-HB has proven methodologies and needs only the resources to deliver them. A gift, in honor of a friend, family member or associate, will provide the finances needed now to move ahead in this life saving work.

Please look through MN’s catalog of gifts/wish list and choose one (or more!) that appeals to you, or make a direct contribution so that it can be used where the need is greatest.

How do I honor someone with a "gift beyond the present"?

Online catalogs can be accessed by going to www.maisondenaissance.org and clicking on the title, "Take Action" at the top of the homepage. Simply choose a gift item from the online catalog and indicate who the gift is honoring. A certificate will be presented to the recipient. Anonymous gifts are also welcome.

Orders may be placed directly on the web site listed above or mailed to: Healthy Mother–Healthy Babies, 6247 Brookside Boulevard, Suite 224, Kansas City, MO 64113. Direct questions to 816.812.7100 or catalog@hm-hb.org.

Maison de Naissance Maison de Naissance is a program of The Healthy Mother–Healthy Babies Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.

Friends of MN

Reducing the mortality rate of both infants and their Mothers is in line with #4 and #5 of the UN Millennium Goals. The services provided by Maison de Naissance in Haiti include family planning, vitamins and medicines for older children in the family, and treatment for expectant Mothers who have AIDS so that their babies will not be born HIV positive. It is the hope of MN that even more services can be added in the future. More services will require more funding. We can help.

Watch for the MN collection box at coffee hours on the Sundays when there is an infant baptism and please make a donation to ensure the delivery a healthy baby in Haiti.

Parking Safety

Several cars belonging to parishioners have been vandalized while parked on the streets adjacent to the Cathedral during Sunday morning worship.  Whether you park on the street, in the Cathedral parking lot or the parking garage, please do not leave valuables in your car.  This includes anything that "might" contain something valuable such as shopping bags, gym bags or backpacks.

Be a tutor

Have you ever wanted to make a difference in a child’s life? Have you ever considered how you could make the Kansas City School District better? Do you have an hour a week you could commit to an enormously rewarding experience?

The Cathedral has a wonderful opportunity to reach out to our surrounding community. We are partnering with Primitivo Garcia Elementary School on the West Side to provide one-on-one tutoring in reading to students Kindergarten through the fifth grade. They will provide orientation and training on their educational software.

Tutors will work at the school with individual students in 15-20 minute intervals. The only requirement is that you be able to read English reasonably proficiently. Spanish language skills are not necessary. Almost any scheduling limitations can be accommodated as the school can use tutors anytime from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For more information or to volunteer please contact the Cathedral office at 816.474.8260.

Offering Hospitality and Prayers

As part of our ministry of hospitality, the Cathedral has recently added a book for intercessions. This bound volume may be found on a lectern adjacent to the prayer desk in the nave. Here, Cathedral members and visitors alike throughout the week can offer prayer on behalf of themselves or others, or offer thanksgiving for a blessing received.

We believe that God hears the prayers of faithful persons everywhere AND we believe that sometimes we need to make our prayers concrete by writing them down; we ask only that the Cathedral community treat with holiness the prayers that are offered, honoring the dignity of those involved through appropriate measures of confidentiality.

The yellow prayer request cards will continue to be available in the pews and in the tract rack near the tower room. These cards will continue to be the primary means by which the Cathedral Caregivers’ Prayer Chain will be apprised of parishioners’ prayer requests.
